According to a comprehensive study by revenue intelligence company Gong, sales teams that leverage AI are far outperforming those that don’t. The company analyzed more than 7 million sales opportunities across 3,600 businesses and discovered that organizations using AI generated 77 percent more revenue per representative. This finding underscores a broader trend: AI isn’t just automating administrative tasks, it’s informing strategy and giving salespeople a competitive edge.

Historically, sales technology has focused on activity tracking and pipeline management. Customer relationship management (CRM) systems helped teams log calls and meetings, while forecasting tools attempted to predict quarterly results. In recent years, AI has injected new capabilities. Natural language processing can transcribe calls and extract key themes. Machine‑learning models can score leads based on conversion likelihood. Gong’s research shows that companies adopting these tools are not only closing more deals but also improving win rates and reducing sales cycles.

One of the most significant shifts is the emergence of “revenue‑specific AI.” Unlike general‑purpose AI platforms, which provide broad functionality across departments, revenue‑specific systems are tailored for sales workflows. The report notes that teams using such tools see 85 percent greater commercial impact and 13 percent higher revenue growth compared with those using generic AI.

Gong’s study also finds that AI adoption is moving from automation to intelligence. Early experiments focused on automating note‑taking and scheduling. Now AI models can predict quarterly performance more accurately than human judgment alone. They can surface opportunities to cross‑sell or upsell, and they can coach reps on language that resonates with specific customer personas. In essence, AI is becoming a digital mentor for sales teams.

For entrepreneurs building sales organizations, the implications are profound. First, investing in revenue intelligence is no longer optional. As growth slows, the report notes that average revenue growth decelerated to 16 percent in 2025, companies must find productivity gains wherever they can.
