Forty years after researchers first warned about rising childhood obesity, the problem has only worsened. In the early 1960s, about 5% of U.S. children were obese. By 2020, that figure had quadrupled to roughly 20%, and more recent estimates suggest that more than one in three children or adolescents are overweight or obese. The drivers of this epidemic are multifaceted: children consume more calories and move less; marketing encourages processed foods; healthy foods can be more expensive; and genetic and socioeconomic factors shape access and behavior.

Public policy plays a role, too. Sugary beverage taxes and restrictions on junk‑food advertising to children are often debated but seldom implemented. Meanwhile, newer interventions such as metabolic surgery and potent anti‑obesity medications (including GLP‑1 drugs) show promise but are costly and not a panacea.

Entrepreneurs can influence this landscape in several ways. As leaders of companies, you can prioritize healthy food options in cafeterias, support flexible schedules that allow employees to exercise and invest in community initiatives that make nutritious foods more accessible. Innovators in food technology can develop affordable, tasty products with whole food ingredients. Investors can back startups that fight food deserts or create engaging fitness tools for children. At home, founders can model balanced eating and active lifestyles for their families. Tackling childhood obesity requires systems thinking, the same mindset that builds successful companies.
