Building Emotional "Fitness" and Authority

Building Emotional "Fitness" and Authority - Trillii

14December2025

Founders operate on a psychological tightrope, balancing optimism with anxiety. Psychologist Dr. Emily Anhalt identifies seven traits of emotional fitness,  self‑awareness, empathy, willingness to play, curiosity, mindfulness, resilience and effective communication. Her research reveals that 72% of entrepreneurs have mental health concerns, yet most do not seek therapy. This article explains why emotional fitness is a leadership advantage and how founders can cultivate mental resilience.

The unique pressures of founding

Entrepreneurs are often portrayed as fearless risk‑takers. In reality, they face immense psychological strain. Long hours, financial uncertainty and the responsibility of leading teams can produce anxiety and self‑doubt. Dr. Emily Anhalt, a psychologist who has spent more than a decade studying founders, notes that they walk a “thin tightrope between self‑belief and self‑doubt”. Founders will go above and beyond for their company but often neglect their own wellbeing.

A startling statistic underscores the stakes: 72% of entrepreneurs have mental health concerns. Despite this, a similar proportion are not in therapy. Mental health struggles at the top can lead to unstable leadership, eroding morale, retention and trust. Dr. Anhalt likens mental health to fuel: if founders run on fumes and hit a roadblock, they sputter out or damage the engine.

The seven traits of emotional fitness

After interviewing hundreds of leaders, Anhalt distilled emotional fitness into seven traits:

  1. Self‑awareness: Emotionally fit leaders understand their triggers and biases. They continuously reflect on their feelings and how those feelings influence interactions. Anhalt emphasizes that self‑awareness is the foundation for all other traits.
  2. Empathy: Founders must put themselves in others’ shoes, recognizing that their own resilience may differ from that of their team. Empathetic leaders ask how decisions affect employees and seek to understand team members’ experiences.
  3. Willingness to play: The ability to experiment and take risks without fear of failure fosters creativity. Playfulness encourages innovation and helps leaders cope with uncertainty.
  4. Curiosity: Emotionally fit founders are lifelong learners. They ask questions, seek feedback and remain open to new perspectives.
  5. Mindfulness: This involves being present in the moment and managing stress through practices such as meditation or journaling. Mindfulness creates space between stimulus and response, preventing reactive decisions.
  6. Resilience: Resilience is the capacity to recover from setbacks. It grows when leaders allow themselves to feel emotions, seek support and bounce back rather than pushing through stoically. In the Entrepreneur article, a founder named Sam improved his resilience by delegating, meditating and treating self‑care as sacred, which helped his company navigate the pandemic.
  7. Effective communication: Leaders must articulate feelings and expectations clearly. Communication reduces misunderstandings and builds trust.

Self‑awareness: Start with yourself

Anhalt calls self‑awareness the most significant trait because it underpins the rest. She warns against institutional transference, where founders project unrelated emotions onto work. To build self‑awareness, she advises tracing emotions back to their roots and taking responsibility for one’s part before asking others to change. Therapy can support this process, even when “nothing’s wrong”. Yet many founders view therapy as a last resort. Anhalt argues that reframing therapy as proactive maintenance, like going to the gym, shifts the narrative from fixing problems to cultivating strength.

Empathy and team wellbeing

Empathy is critical during crises. Founders often push through hardships and assume others should too. Anhalt notes that lack of empathy shows up when leaders say, “I’m not taking a vacation, but you should,” leaving employees unsure if they can rest. She recommends understanding what team members are going through and using tools like emotional fitness surveys to gauge wellbeing. In times of uncertainty, empathetic leaders create spaces for employees to express concerns, which informs better decisions.

Resilience: Stoicism is not strength

The Entrepreneur article illustrates the cost of stoicism through the story of Jake, a founder whose anxiety brought him to the brink of collapse. He avoided asking for help, believing independence was his superpower. After a crisis, he finally sought therapy. The article contrasts Jake with Sam, who embraced support, delegated tasks, meditated and built healthy routines. When the pandemic hit, Sam’s company pivoted successfully because he had the mental and physical energy to lead. The lesson is clear: resilience is cultivated through self‑care and collaboration, not stoic endurance.

Building your inner game

Founders can develop emotional fitness through deliberate practices:

  • Therapy or coaching: Seek professional support to process emotions, identify blind spots and build coping strategies.
  • Mindfulness routines: Incorporate meditation, journaling or breathing exercises to reduce stress and increase presence.
  • Feedback loops: Use surveys or one‑on‑one conversations to gauge team wellbeing and understand how your behavior affects others.
  • Set boundaries: Prioritize sleep, exercise and personal relationships. Delegate tasks and avoid glorifying overwork. As Sam learned, stepping back enables you to come back stronge.
  • Practice empathy: Ask open‑ended questions, listen without interrupting and consider cultural differences in emotional expression. Encourage employees to take care of themselves.
  • Communicate openly: Share your vision, feelings and expectations. Transparency builds trust and reduces misinterpretations.

Emotional fitness is not soft; it is a strategic advantage. With 72% of entrepreneurs facing mental health concerns, ignoring wellbeing jeopardizes leadership and business outcomes. By cultivating self‑awareness, empathy, resilience and other traits, founders can build the inner strength required to navigate uncertainty and inspire others. Mental health is the fuel that powers your leadership engine, keep the tank full.
